The project “Cinema Impero" intends to document the current situation of a country barely known abroad, was it not for the millions of political refugees who arrived in Europe in the last years. The project aims to show how strong and alive, seventy years after the end of the colony, the Italian heritage still is in the country, not merely in the stunning architectures, which represent the greatest expression of the rationalist and futurist movement, but also in the perpetuation of the Italian culture, gastronomy and traditions.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Birmingham Pavillion by Mahtab Hussain – Honest With You. 2008 - 2019 Honest With You is a commentary on the changing identity of British Muslim woman, which examines the motivations of those who have resorted to concealing their femininity by re-veiling and wearing the hijab while others have rejected it outright. The veil has become a prominent symbol for Muslim women in the West and serves as the locus of a movement that offers two powerful political statements. It identifies those who strongly oppose Western intervention in Muslim countries while, at the same time, proffers a visual rejection of what many believe to be the over sexualized culture of Western society. Its popularity is driven within the UK by Islamic societies that have formed pressure groups, as well as immigration from Muslim countries that wear the hijab, such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Egypt, Somalia and Syria, where the movement ‘Hijabee chic’ originated. These newcomers have defiantly held on to their traditional Islamic dress while introducing these concepts to British Muslim communities. Hussain’s research has revealed that, like their male counterparts, British Muslim women are also in flux, simultaneously clashing and succumbing to Western ideology while attempting to uphold their cultural traditions. However, and in spite of these competing interests, Muslim women are encouraging each other to become educated, to attend university and to build careers before they marry.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Addis Abeba Pavillion- New Flower by Adriano Marzi. Africa’s diplomatic capital and symbol of the African renaissance, Addis Ababa is living an extraordinary transformation. Included by New York Times and Lonely Planet in the list of the world’s most interesting cities to visit thanks to its vibrant cultural scene, the “swinging Addis” is evolving at a very fast pace, experiencing a stable economic growth and a massive urban expansion. The “forest city” founded by Emperor Menelik II has developed to a modern “concrete jungle”. As new concrete-and-glass skyscrapers come up like mushrooms, the traditional neighborhoods made of wood and mud are blown down to make room for a new skyline worthy of a modern global capital. The City’s highway network grows larger and larger, while traffic increases dramatically. The light train line which recently came in operation seems not enough for counteracting the frenzy that has seized the city. Torn between great expectations from the “New” coming forth and bewilderment caused by the chaos growing all around, Addis’ inhabitants wait patiently and confidently for the dust of the city-yard to fade out and the train of modernity to allow them all get up. Will Ethiopia’s traditions and roots be strong enough to stand the impact of “Development”? Will the East Africa “peaceful island” resists notwithstanding the growing inequalities brought forth by economic growth?</image:caption>

<image:caption>BERLIN, GARDEN CITY - Installation by Sara Busnardo.

<image:caption>"Dilli Chalo" New Dheli Pavillion. Since October 2020, at the cry of Dilli Chalo - let's go to Delhi - 250 million farmers from all Indian states are animating what has been defined by many as the largest protest in history. The origin is the approval of three acts of land reform that would benefit multinationals at the expense of 650 million farmers - almost half of the Indian population. It is estimated that every minute 30 people migrate from rural areas to urban centers and the reform will contribute to increasing this exodus that is making the cities of India a combination of the "Generic Cities" theorized by Rem Koolhaas and the "Planet of Slums" of Mike Davis. The common denominator remains that of unsustainability, a consequence of an ultraliberalism that informs the rapid, often dystopian, changes in the country. DILLI CHALO echoes that cry of protest that captures both the despair and the grandeur of the community. Thinking, reimagining and reclaiming the city as a collective project therefore becomes a mission of vital importance. Promoting art as a social and cultural practice, creating public spaces of value in which inclusiveness becomes an operational guide, is what St + art India Foundation has been promoting since 2014 in many Indian cities. In Favara, one of the foundation's key projects - Lodhi Art District - becomes the object of analysis as a prototype of imagination for a community that can go beyond social, economic and ethnic divisions, in a process of re-appropriation of physical and symbolic spaces. Through photographs and stories, maps and graphics, but also works created by some of the most prolific local artists, DILLI CHALO will introduce the public to the vast visual and social landscape of a stratified and polarized city that is at the same time extraordinarily lively and creative. <image:caption>Brutal London by Alessia Gammarota. London has the second most over-priced property market in the world. At the same time, it's facing a shortage of affordable homes and an increase in the number of properties being left empty - sometimes for years, and in most cases in the wealthier neighbourhoods. This is the result of the so-called 'regeneration' process. Regeneration begun in the 1980s with the aim of redeveloping depressed areas of the city, and since then it has changed the landscape of entire neighbourhoods in the capital, leading to an increase in both land values and economic inequality. My story shows the effects of this housing crisis in London, while addressing the basic right of citizens to have a shelter and a home. Through taking a broad view of perspectives that might otherwise be considered independent of each other, I aim to show the connections and relationships between different aspects of London’s housing crisis. These include: - Squatting, which became illegal in the UK in 2012 for residential properties, and has faced further restrictions even in non residential properties, leading to increasingly rapid evictions. In January 2017 a group of squatters occupied the property of a Russian billionaire that had stood empty for three years in Central London, opening it up as a homeless shelter. They were evicted within a week and fined court costs. - Council Estates, which since the 1980s have been stigmatised as unsafe places in which to live, as well as breeding grounds for anti-social behaviour. With the excuse of improving the quality of the surrounding are and the lives of the community, as well as increasing the density of housing, councils across London have drawn on these stereotypes in order to demolish estates under their care and sell the land to private developers. The reality is that residents of council estates who cannot afford either to rent or to buy the new properties are forced into temporary accommodations, moved out of the borough and eventually relocated out of London altogether in a process that has been described as ‘social cleansing’. The lack of investments in council estates, the withholding of maintenance and their inadequate refurbishment recently resulted in the disaster of the Grenfell Tower fire. - New developments, which thanks to government tax breaks for investors and public funding for the building of private properties, are proliferating across London. Built for capital investment and second home ownership by UK and foreign investors, rather than the housing needs of local communities, this housing boom is changing not only the landscape but also the soul of the city.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Smirne Pavillion by Stefano Pugliese Architect and Designer and Ali Matay Visual Artist Built as a settlement area, the city of Smyrna, in Turkish Izmir, dating back to the 3rd century BC, hosted many identities throughout its history. It is impossible to say that Izmir is still completely under the auspices of a single nation. In its present state, the city under the borders of Turkey, self-styling as a transition boundary between the Europe with Asia due to the important strategic position and is the gateway to the Aegean Sea is therefore inevitable that act as a bridge for Migrants. İzmir is one of the rare examples where migrants are included, apart from the fact that minority groups have their own settlements. In Izmir every body is a ‘stranger’. This function has been transformed, particularly as a bridge between Europe and Asia, into areas where the various regions of the city reflect the feeling of belonging to minorities and migrants. One of the best examples of this is the Basmane region. The invisible borders created in these areas have been interfered with the political borders of Greece due to the fact that it is the gateway to the sea. In fact, the political boundaries that were clearly drawn did not show the same clarity culturally, but remained as an unknown, invisible but boundary of experiences. In this context, this project focuses on the cultural reflection of the invisible borders of Izmir and the re-identification of these boudaries defined on the map. The project will be presented thru visual materials and illustrations. During the days of the event, a physical structure as an installation representing the project will be built as a collaborative workshop in Favara.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Buenos Aires. Clasificados villas By Davide Vero Raccontare una città: Buenos Aires. <image:caption>NEW YORK, CHICAGO, BOSTON E NEW ORLEANS Pavillion - Giving Back by Nita Sturiale. “Think of giving not as a duty but as a privilege.” ―John D. Rockefeller Jr. American Foundations have a huge impact in communities around the world -  influencing education, health, social services, media, arts and culture, research, and the sustainability and liveability of cities.  The support of these foundations is crucial at a global scale. There are over 86,000 foundations in the United States. The amount of money that these foundations give each year exceeds 60 billion dollars. These foundations are founded by individuals, families, and corporations. They are driven by a desire to give back and make positive change towards a sustainable, culturally rich, and equitable future. Cities are at the forefront of this change. Cities are meeting the challenge of climate change and economic disparity by updating infrastructure, becoming more sustainable and walkable, supporting the arts, and invigorating individual neighborhoods.  This evolution is a collaboration between private and public institutions. 100 Resilient Cities , pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation, is dedicated to helping cities become more physically, socially and economically resilient.  The cities on the list identify a Chief Resilience Officer, create a resilience strategy, and access partners and networks to get the work done. Bloomberg Philanthropies is encouraging Mayors and cities to better use data and evidence to engage the public, improve services, evaluate progress and fund “what works”. The winners of Mayors Challenge received $1million to begin implementing potentially breakthrough ideas to address homelessness, mobility, climate change, and economic opportunity. The Obama Foundation is spearheading a youth leadership corps as well as launching the Obama Presidential Center - a new landmark and an economic engine for the city of Chicago. The Center will create thousands of new jobs in Chicago, while giving new life to Frederick Law Olmsted’s, 19th century American landscape architect, vision of a cohesive, walkable and iconic Jackson Park. Also in Chicago, visual artist Theaster Gates, self-described as an activator of political and social change, has created the Rebuild Foundation.  Its most visible project is the Stony Island Arts Bank built in a decades-long abandoned bank building. Gates purchased the bank from the City of Chicago for one dollar and through a combination of fundraising and the sales of his own work, raised funds to make a remarkable transformation. The building was restored to be a ‘bank’’ of arts and culture and is a community center dedicated to the mission of economic, cultural and environmental justice. All over the world there are countless individual artists, architects, inventors, teachers, public servants, and volunteers that are working to make change in their communities.  With the help of foundational support their ideas become reality. Funding in the US happens at multiple scales from multiple directions - private, public, and corporate. It happens at every level of development and execution -  from initial concept development all the way up to grants given to City Mayors for implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects. The foundations that are most successful understand that their job is to provide the money, the access to permits and contracts, and the business networks and relationships that have the capacity to realize the visions of the individuals on the ground - those who are embedded in the communities they serve. These foundations understand that the deep knowledge of the local environment is held within the neighborhood and by the individuals that do the work of making local and personal connections. At the center of successful projects is an individual or small group of people with a passion for a specific problem or hope, working alongside large scale foundations that have a philosophy and a vision based in the ideal of equity, justice and liberty for all. “For it is in giving that we receive.” ―St. Francis of Assisi</image:caption>

<image:caption>CHONGQING Pavillion by Antonio Bennica.

<image:caption>Detroit Pavillion- By Municipality of Detroit Street Talk: Reimagining the Motor City through Resident Engaged Revitalization A city is only as vibrant and healthy as its citizens. In a city such as Detroit where disinvestment and bankruptcy has destroyed infrastructure as well as lives, municipal planning and historic preservation staff are applying innovative strategies to re-build. This rebuild includes considering the past as critical to the present and future of Detroit. In order to gain resident’s trust, planners are listening to their stories, offering innovative solutions to instill hope and create a city “secure in its future, grounded in its roots, and hopeful in its present state." (The Planning and Development Department Mission Statement). Learning the stories of citizens through oral histories is an innovative planning tool that provides a critical link to residents sentimental perception of the past, and the possibility for the future. It helps residents feel validated and begins to heal the trauma of years of marginalization and disinvestment. How exactly do these oral histories inform the plan? In this pavillion, We (the City of Detroit) demonstrate a number of cases in which the intangible component of the planning process- oral histories- have physically transformed the built environment. Our three cases (East Jefferson, Dexter Ave, and Rosa Parks/12th Street), center on some of Detroit’s most famous streets that have changed dramatically over the years. From vibrant places, to formidable spaces, resident’s stories help us focus our attention on the street as the destination, not simply a thoroughfare.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tribute to Giorgi Chakhava - BEYOND THE IRON CURTAIN Installation by Nana Zaalishvili In March 1946 Winston Churchill spoke as a guest of Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, where he predicted the future of post-war Europe under the ‘IRON CURTAIN‘ of Soviet rule: “…From Stettin in the Baltic, to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern... All these famous cities and the populations around them lie in what I must call the Soviet sphere, and all are subject, in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence but to a very high and in some cases increasing measure of control from Moscow.“ BEYOND THE IRON CURTAIN is an installation, which tries to explain that Georgia was architecturally very active and interesting during the soviet regime, even while the control from Moscow was very strong. While architecture was in bloom and the architects were creating iconic buildings in the USA and Europe, architects in the Soviet Union were making the scene with their own style. When your only customer is the government, who controls all of your decisions, concepts and shapes, working as an architect becomes a very specific profession. Georgia during the Soviet regime was a blooming country and architects were at their best to create unique shapes even under the control. Not only buildings, but they were showing their vision through small architectural objects such as bus stops, gas stations, city entrance signs, furniture and more. Giorgi Chakhava (1923–2007), an Iconic Georgian architect was one of the bright minds working beyond the Iron Curtain. Even though he was on the “other side” of the world, he still managed to create unique structures under the soviet regime and his buildings are still attracting the eye in the 21st century and are modern to this era. He’s most known work is the Road Ministry Building in Tbilisi, (now the Bank of Georgia Head Quarters) which attained attention straight after it was completed and still is one of the main landmarks for Tbilisi. Besides working as an architect at Idaaf Architects, the studio I established, I have been photographing Soviet Bus Stops around Georgia for the last 3 years. I found many interesting structures all around the country and the most unique ones are bus stops made by the “Building Element” invented by Giorgi Chakhava. I was part of the team who worked on the book about Chakhava during which I had an opportunity to go through his archives and discover about these “Building Elements“ Chakhava invented. He had used them to create various structures, not only bus stops, but also bridges, offices, gas stations, houses and more</image:caption>

I was born hearing impaired so my family and friends communicated with me using Yolŋu Sign Language (YSL). Where I live Yolŋu teach all children YSL from a young age, so I can communicate with all Yolŋu from my community easily. YSL is important for hearing Yolŋu also, when we go hunting we use it to communicate from a distance. When I went to school I was taught Auslan, so now I use YSL and Auslan to communicate.
